Another day of sensory overload

I arrived at the Seagate Centre Saturday around 8:15 for day 2 of the show with clear skies and cool temperatures. The admission is $8.00 and kids under 12 are free.

I expected the crowd to be bigger and by all accounts (at least in my estimation) today's crowd was a bit bigger than Friday, probably;y due to the fact that this was the long day of the two for the weekend. The show closes at 2:00 Sunday and people are generally working Friday, so Saturday's the big one.

During Friday's tour of the swap shop and main exhibit hall, I was making notes on potential purchases jotting down booth numbers and product info. I bought a number of items Saturday and I'll try to recap the more significant ones here.

I also snapped a bunch of photos from the static competition. You can click on the photos in the gallery to bring them up to full size.

Transmitter Flight Pad

Introducing the Flight Pad by Jerry Cozort. After I tried this product at the booth, I wanted one. With a solid resting paltform for the transmitter and a nice padded neck strap, I felt this was going to make having the DX7 hanging from my neck much more comfortable. The complete pad and neck strap sells for $50. It is a well built and sturdy product. Check out Jerry's website.

Aerofly Pro Deluxe flight simulator

I have been going back and forth about whether to get into using a sim for the better part of 2 years. I saw the demo of the Aerofly Pro Deluxe sold by Hobby Lobby and really liked the way it flew. This sim includes some bonus items such as full scale airplanes like a Spitfire and others. The sound is great. Flight dynamics are superb in my opinion. Since I decided to get into IMAC this season, a simulator will help my efforts. Aerofly is available at Hobby Lobby for $200. The show price was $169. No shipping and no tax. It includes a USB transmitter interface.

Mezjlik Propeller

I've been using wood props on my 88" Yak since I put it online last season. People had been telling me they really improve performance, so I finally sprang for one. The recommended prop hands down by my IMAC peers is the Mezjlik carbon fiber prop. At $62, it's a serious expense. I hope the claims are as true as they sound. The 23 x 8 prop was purchased at the Desert Aircraft booth. I have the DA50 which has been running great since being put into service in June 2008.

The DA booth was very busy with questions from customers as well as brisk sales

The DA boys brought a good supply of engines and props for this year's show. All engines are built in the USA.

DVD's

There were several vendors selling DVD's of all kinds. I started watching these after I borrowed a couple from a fellow club member a couple weeks ago. The quality of RC videos today is great with HD resolution and quality production. So, I sought after a couple to start my own collection. A copy of the Tucson Aerobatic Shootout produced by Higher Plane Productions was purchased over at the Extreme Flight booth. A few rows over, Propwash Video Productionshad a wide assortment of instructional and event-related DVD's. I picked up Florida Jets 2009 and Monster Planes 2008.

Monster Planes USA is a Frank Tiano Event that takes place in Florida. 2008 was the first year for the meet.

Miscellaneous Stuff

Other purchases included glue from Mercury Adhesives, an IMAC 2009 rulebook, Merlin glow plugs for the Jet and a throw meter from HP Pilots.

Special Mention

I was looking for cloth covers to protect my shiny new prop and all I could find find was a leather-look type which I did not like. I was in Aisle A and came across the guys from Hawkmodels, China. I spotted some blue prop and heli rotor covers and asked about them, indicating I had a 23 inch prop. There was a communication gap initially but they finally figured out I wanted to buy the covers. They insisted they were free. Nice guys. Apparently they were promotional type items and I walked away with prop covers.
