Rick & Maggie's Room and Spa Addition

Welcome graphic

For years, Maggie's wanted a screened porch on the patio. I wanted a spa, aka a hot tub. Finally, we're putting both in. As the project progresses, we'll be posting photos on this site. We're very excited that it's finally happening. Check the site from time to time for updated photos.

We contracted with Elite Home Remodeling, Inc. and can strongly recommend their work.

Updated 11 May, 2007
According to a report from back east, Maggie says the roof was completed today. The porch door is coming in next week. One of the things about doing a fairly involved project like this, is that it gets you thinking about what else should be done "while we're at it". As a result, we've now decided to replace the heavily weathered back door that leads to the new room, formerly, the patio. The screen/glass storm door has to come off, leaving this nasty old thing totally exposed. So, it's off with the old, on with the new. Oh yeah, the front door is also in bad shape, so it's getting replaced as well. All this work (as if we're doing it) NOT!, only adds to the beauty and value to our home. When you've already gone well into five figures for this sort of thing, a few more bucks won't hurt.

Updated 9 May, 2007.
Well, I finally got a few moments to snap some shots of the progress on the room. The project started on April 19th. During the first week, all we really had was 10 holes in the ground; 5 of which had to be made in the patio, 32" deep for the pier footers. Another 5 were supposed to be placed at the edge of the patio. However, the footer that was poured way back 50+ years ago is 38" of solid concrete. That's too much work for 5 holes, so the contractor extended the room by 6" and voila! more space!

After the Pier footer posts were cut and set, the concrete was poured and after they set, the work really got going quickly. Maggie and I left on May 27 for Florida and when we came back on the 4th, the framing and most of the rafters was up.

What you're viewing here is the current state of the project as of 5/9. Windows are in (there's a story to tell on that), roof is on, although not complete.

What's left is the flooring, rough electrical and the windows, ah yes, the windows. These are made by
PGT. We got them with a dark glaze, much like a tint really. Well, when you stack all the panels at the top or bottom of the window frame to open, it's like stacking many sunshields and as a result, the light is TOTALLY blocked, making it look like a smaller window and reducing our view of the yard, park, etc. The fix? Replace the PGT material with clear panels. Only $1000. Great. The contractor should have informed us about this. So, we're negotiating on a cost to remedy the situation.

Next week, the Gulf Coast Spa guy comes by with said tub to set and install. The electrician will be running a manly 220VAC circuit to power the thing. We got a tour of the manufacturing facility while in Tampa last week. Neat to see how it's done, but I wouldn't want to make them for a living. Losts of dust, hot and little air moving in the joint.
