The Blizzard of 2008 - Columbus Style

It's Official - 20.4 inches and the worst storm in recorded Ohio history.

On March 7-8, 2008 we got hammered with the worst storm ever here in Columbus. Dubbed "The Blizzard of 08" we received 20+ inches of the white stuff, beating out all other areas of Ohio.

Snow emergency plans were the norm in central Ohio. The local TV news went on the air Saturday morning at 6:00. NBC channel 4 had the usual a.m. tandem crew on continuously until 1:00 p.m., pre-empting normally scheduled programming.

White out conditions prevailed throughout the day Saturday with TV remote crews reporting in from a variety of areas in central Ohio. Most areas were under level 2 snow emergeny plans with numerous level 3 plans in effect on counties bordering our county; Franklin.

Needless to say, we stayed put all day and night Saturday. There was no reason to go out in that mess and become a storm statistic. We spent the afternoon relaxing, reading and just hanging out; something we rarely do on a Saturday.

I got the driveway cleared the first time Saturday morning. The trusty Craftsman 9 HP two-stage snow-blo-a-matic did a great job. After the storm passed, I went back out to again clear the drive as I watched a fine sunset to the west. Maggie took to shoveling a path out back to gain access to the park gate as well to provide an area for Jazz to walk and take care of business.

Sunday, I helped one of the neighbors who began a futile attempt at shoveling her driveway. The chore was easily handled by the blower. Shovels? We don't need no steenking shovels.

The deck and hot tub area was another matter entirely when it came to clearing the snow. I think I spent the batter past of 90 minutes clearing all that from the tub cover and deck. I mean, you gotta have the hot tub available for winter use and if I waited for the snow to melt, there would invaribaly be the thaw-refreeze issue and getting the residual frozen mess of the deck and cover would have proven extremely difficult at best.

So, that's the deal here in Columbus. Check out the pix below. Click the images to enlarge.

So long from Rick and Maggie's!!
